  Dr Athula Sumathipala, the Hon Director of the Institute for Research & Development (IRD delivered the PGIM Oration 2011.
Dr Athula Sumathipala was selected to deliver the 2011 oration of the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine. The oration was titled “Patients with Medically Unexplained Symptoms; Epidemiology to Treatment Development Research in Sri Lanka – Going from Local to Global level” is based on 20 years of his research in Sri Lanka. It was held on the 9th of December at the PGIM auditorium.

  COMRAID Follow up Study
This is the follow up study of COMRAID, which was done to find out about common mental health disorders, displacement and resilience among adults living in the Puttalam district. The follow up study will involve internally displaced people who have resettled in the Mannar district, and other still in Puttalam.

Hon. S.B.Dissanayake Minister of Higher Education visits the Institute for Research & Development.

Hon. S.B.Dissanayake Minister of Higher Education made an observational visit to the Institute for Research & Development on the 1st of November 2011. Difficulties and challenges faced by the IRD were discussed. The minister pledged his support for IRD initiative.

Director of IRD Dr Athula Sumathipala and executive committee member Prof. Sisira Siribaddana along with the academic and other staff were present during this visit.

  "APSL ESSAY COMPETITION" Announcement of Winners and Award Ceremony
The Island-wide APSL Essay Competition was launched in September last year (2010) in order to engage the students and general public with the government in rapid development of the country. The submission of essays was closed on 31st December 2010, and 106 essays were received from 19 districts. After the first round of assessment by the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Sri Lanka, 20 selected essays were sent to APSL-UK for second stage assessment. Each essay was marked by at least three examiners and the winners were selected by a professional examination board.

  The Study: Impact of Spouse Migration on Left Behind Families completes Data Colection
Data collection of ISM study was successfully completed during April 2011-July in 6 selected districts Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Kurunegala and Puttlam.

  The COMRAID Study’s data collection phase came to an end on the 10th of June 2011.
It was conducted as part of the Masters Fellowship in Public Health and Tropical Medicine held by Dr Chesmal Siriwardhana. The aim of this project was to describe the prevalence of common mental disorders, post traumatic stress disorder and also suicidal ideation in adults from the northern and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka who have been internally displaced, and are currently residing in camps and settlements in Puttalam district in the northwestern province.

Data collection of INDIGO-Depression study was successfully completed during March 2011-May. The extent of stigmatisation and discrimination against people suffering from depression was investigated for this specific study.

  Dr. Chesmal Siriwardhena receives a prestigious award from a leading international university.
Dr. Chesmal Siriwardhena was awarded the prestigious “Professor Robin Murray MSc Award” from the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, UK. The title of his thesis was “Associations between exposure to conflict, tsunami and mental disorders and school absenteeism among Sri Lankan children”. Dr. Chesmal is the first recipient of this award.

  Workshop titled “Initiative workshop for policy development of veterinary ethics in Sri Lanka”
The “initiative workshop for policy development of veterinary ethics in Sri Lanka” was held at the Institute of Continuous Education, Gannoruwa from 28th to 30th July for the first time in the country with the main aim of building a dialogue on developing a veterinary ethics policy in Sri Lanka. This workshop was organized by the Institute for Research & Development in collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College (UK), University Federation for Animal Welfare (UK), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Peradeniya and Department of Animal Production and Health.

  Presentation of research findings
The presentation of research findings of the study titled "Investigating the perspectives of community mental health workers in Sri Lanka" was held on the 12th of July at the Institute for Research and Development. This study was conducted in collaboration with the Institute for research and Development by Miss Namali Samarasekara, a medical student from the University of Leeds as part of the intercalated BSc on international health. The Institute for research and development acts as the project host for students carrying out research in Sri Lanka.

  Workshop on Qualitative research methods
A one day workshop on qualitative research methods was organized by the Institute for research and development at its premises in Battaramulla on the 28th of June in view of the future qualitative research planned to be carried out by the IRD targeting mainly the research assistants attached to the institute. The resource person for this workshop was Dr. Godwin Kodituwakku, the director at the department of research and development, national institute of Education Maharagama who is also the chief editor of Gaveshana.

  State of the art Genetic Lab for Sri Lanka
In collaboration with the Sri Lanka Twin Registry project and King's College, London we are about to open this modern genetic laboratory equipped with a fully automated gene sequencer. The 'Think Tank' of the IRD on biotechnology aims to undertake ethical, high quality research as well as service development that will bring benefits to the wider community. We will also support and collaborate with those who wish to conduct their research within the country as opposed to exporting genetic material abroad.

  Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Programme
The recent tsunami revealed that Sri Lanka neither had policy nor the capacity to identify dead bodies using modern techniques. Even the existing medico-legal services were not given priority during the immediate aftermath of the tsunami. Therefore, our strategic work since tsunami was designed to achieve the overall objectives of working towards a national policy on management of dead bodies and a nationwide service development to identify dead bodies following a disaster .

  IRD Nominated Inventor Wins Top Award at National Science Day 2006 Receives half a million rupees
Local inventor Mr. Sunil Withanachchi of Electro-Mechanical Designers & Industrial Fabricators- SD TECHNOFAB and the chair of the ‘Think Tank' on Inventions at IRD was awarded the prize under the category of ‘Engineering product design and development for commercial applications' at the National Science and Technology Awards 2006. It was his locally designed and made, innovated steering controlled hand tractor; the HARDYMEC LOAD MASTER and the HARDYMEC HYDROCAB Hoist that won him this award.

The World Forum 2006 was held in Vancouver Canada from 19th-23rd November 2006. Dr. Anura Jayasinghe, an active member of the Institute for Research and Development in Sri Lanka participated from Sri Lanka and presented a paper on physical abuse and neglect among children.

  FRD Organised Courses in Bioethics A Hit with the Participants
The advanced course in bioethics and the first part of the basic course in bioethics conducted by the Forum for Research and Development was successfully completed at the Sri Lanka Foundation institute on 13 th and 14 th January 2007. This was held in parallel with the international conference on ‘Disaster Related Research Ethics - a Developing World Perspective'. Both events were held at the same venue. The local & international experts who participated in the conference also acted as resource persons for the bioethics courses. From those who applied for the courses, participants were chosen to represent a multitude of fields and professions, including; doctors, nurses, teachers, university lecturers and researchers. The courses were conducted in an interactive manner bringing out thought-provoking debates and discussions among the resource persons and participants.

  A Landmark Step Towards Curbing Disaster Research Exploitation of Developing Countries
Over the past couple of years the South-East Asian region has experienced numerous natural disasters that resulted in immeasurable losses of life and property. While the developed nations were prompt to offer assistance in these circumstances, there were a number of instances where foreign personnel conducted disaster related research on human subjects in the guise of aid delivery and treatment for affected individuals. The ethical improprieties that came to light afterwards demonstrated the extent of exploitation taken place at the expense of the already traumatized vulnerable populations, leading to re-traumatizing. This highlighted the lack or inadequacy of proper guidelines to regulate such research in the local setup.

  Translating Research on Medically Unexplained Symptoms Into Policy and Practice
Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) is a common presentation after disasters. Therefore, we made use of tsunami as a window of opportunity to convert 15 years of research on MUS into policy and practice. Over the years, research on MUS in Sri Lanka was funded by the world largest research charity, the Wellcome Trust. The crucial collaboration and supervision was provided by the Section of Epidemiology, Institute of Psyhciatry, King's College, University of London. World Health Organization (WHO) sponsored several training workshops conducted throughout the country. WHO also provided funds for the training manual and the poster distributed to the healthcare institutions islandwide.

  IRD Collaborates in Capacity Building of Bioethics in Vietnam
The National Institute of Biotechnology of the Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology recently organized a workshop for Vietnamese medical and biomedical scientists. The theme of the workshop was ‘Bioethics in Biomedical Research' and was held on 22-23 January 2007 at the Institute of Biotechnology at Hanoi, Vietnam. The workshop was organized by the NIB in collaboration with Institute of Research and Development, Sri Lanka.

  IRD Sparks International Interest in Disaster Research Ethics at the 8th ABC 2007
IRD representatives were lauded by the international academia for their valuable work on disaster research ethics at the 8th Asian Bioethics Conference (ABC 2007), held in Bangkok, Thailand from 19-23 March 2007. Director IRD, Dr. Athula Sumathipala and Research Fellow IRD, Dr. Suwin Hewage participated for the conference as representatives of the IRD. They took active participation in the Research Ethics section of the conference, chaired by Prof. Abnik Gupta.

Dr. Sisira Siribaddana of the IRD chaired the 'Twin Registers & International Collaborations' section of the 12th International Congress of the International Society for Twin Studies(ICTS 2007) held in Ghent, Belgium on 8-10 June 2007.   RANZCP Traveling Professorship 2007 awarded to Director IRD
Dr. Athula Sumathipala, the Director of the Institute for Research & Development has been awarded HB Williams Traveling Professorship for year 2007 by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. He will be the keynote speaker at the annual conference of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, to be held in Napier, New Zealand from 7th to the 10th of October. His speech is titled ‘Medically unexplained symptoms; treatment development research in Sri Lanka' and will be based on his research for more than 20 years conducted in Sri Lanka.

  Open access for a global scientific and medical research community
Biomedcentral has initiated a website aiming to provide resources about open access and internet technologies in the developing world. Emphasizing the benefits to the developing world of increased internet technologies and open access to research, they hope to encourage projects and initiatives, and to showcase research published in open access journals that are of relevance to emerging countries.

Dr Sisira Siribaddana, the coordinator of the bioethics initiative at IRD, has been awarded a scholarship to participate in ‘Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research's (PRIM&R) 2007 Annual Human Research Protection Programs (HRPP) Conference titled “Human Research Protection Programs in an Evolving Research Landscape”.

  Lecture on findings in learning abilities and disabilities from a twin study in UK
IRD organised a lecture titled; “Learning abilities and disabilities: The latest findings from the Twin's Early Development Study” at the new lecture hall of the Lady Ridgeway hospital, Colombo on 12 th November 2007. The lecture was conducted by Dr. Yulia Kovas (Msc, PhD) of SGDP centre, Kings College, University of London and the event was chaired by Prof. Narada Warnasooriya, Vice Chancellor, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

  SPSS data entry and analysis course - Another step taken by IRD for research capacity building
The Institute for Research and Development organised a training course on SPSS data entry and analysis at the IRD office premises from 5 th to the 8 th of November 2007 . Although the main aim of the course was improving research capacity of the IRD staff, it was publicised and opened up for others interested in research outside the IRD as well. The course was conducted by Dr. Yulia Kovas and Ms. Harriet Ball of Kings College , University of London.

The Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI) annual convention was held at the SLFI premises on 6 th and 7 th November 2007. The theme of the event which was “Right to health with special focus on disaster”.   IRD Represents Sri Lanka at Second National Bioethics Conference in Bangalore, India
Two research papers on ethics from the IRD were selected for poster presentations at the Second National Bioethics Conference (NBC) of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics (IJME). The conference was held in Bangalore, India from the 6th to the 8th of December 2007. Dr. Chesmal Siriwardhana of IRD participated in the proceedings as the only person to represent Sri Lanka, in this important conference attended by individuals from the field of bioethics from all over the world.

  Data collection of Sri Lanka's first National Mental Health Survey was successfully completed
Institute for Research and Development (IRD) has been able to successfully conclude the data collection in the first ever National Mental Health Survey, which covered more than 6000 individuals randomly selected from over 600 Grama Niladhari Divisions, and more than 3000 students from over 130 government schools.

  Sri Lankan expatriates in Australia donate funds for 'Gaveshana'
Sri Lankan professionals who are living in Australia have donated funds to the ‘Gaveshana'. In this initiative, headed by Dr. Padmini Howpage, funds were donated for ‘Gaveshana' subscriptions to needy schools in Sri Lanka. Individuals as well as organizations like the ‘Old Vishakian's Group' has contributed to this initiative. The funds were handed over to the ‘Gaveshana' team by Dr. Daya Howpage recently at IRD.

  Social Experience & Mental Health
A lecture themed ‘Social Experience & Mental Health: Insights from Studies of Migration & Ethnicity' was held at IRD recently. This lecture was conducted by Dr. Craig Morgan, senior lecturer, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London. Dr Morgan discussed a research project undertaken by him and his colleagues in London to measure the impact of social experience on mental health status of immigrants of African and Caribbean origin.

Institute for Research & Development has established collaboration with Science Development Network (www.SciDev.net) where IRD will work together with SciDev to promote Sri Lankan science and research in the international arena. Further more, an agreement was reached to share news and other media material between ‘Gaveshana' and SciDev.net.

  World Psychiatric Association invites Dr. Athula Sumathipala to deliver a guest lecture…
Dr. Athula Sumathipala, Director IRD, has been invited to deliver a guest lecture at the WPA Thematic Conference which under the title of “Depression and Other Common Mental Disorders in Primary Care” will be held in Granada (Spain), from the 18th to the 21st of June of 2008. This Conference is a joint initiative of the World Psychiatric Association & WONCA-Europe. It is also co-sponsored by the Word Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), among others.

  Winners of Island Wide Competition on Road Safety
‘Gaveshana' research journal, published by the Institute for Research & Development and Lanka Academic Network (LAcNet) jointly organized an Island-wide Research Project Competition on Road Safety among school children. The objectives of organizing the competition were to educate the general public on road rules and road safety and to popularize concepts of scientific research methodology among students. The competition was mainly aimed at Advanced Level students in schools across the country.

  Improving Identification & Management of Mood Disorders Training workshop, Sydney Australia
Eight Sri Lankan medical professionals recently left for Australia to be trained on management of mood disorders at the Black Dog Institute in Sydney. Institute for Research & Development in collaboration with the Black Dog Institute and other Sri Lankan organizations including Sri Lanka Medical Association, College of General Practitioners, Sri Lanka Mental Health Directorate and the Regional Director of Health Services, Ministry of Health, World Health Organization-Sri Lanka, Creative Action and Open University of Sri Lanka organized the training workshop. The training workshop is funded by the Christopher Molnar Bequest, Australia.

  Director IRD, Dr. Athula Sumathipala left to China on 7th September on an invitation by the Sichuan University in China
He has been invited to share his knowledge and expertise to facilitate post-disaster management, planning and training on the conduct of research in the Sichuan province which was hit by a devastating earthquake in May this year and another earthquake as recently as in August this year.
